Room measurement help

Two ways to measure.
One room record.

HomeUpgraders keeps the browser calibration workflow and the native spatial scanner because they solve different jobsite problems. They should converge on the same Layout Library evidence record without pretending their measurement methods are identical.

Core rule: choose the capture method that fits the room, keep its source/calibration method attached to the evidence, review the resulting geometry, and confirm it before treating it as trusted project geometry.

Prefer a person?

You do not have to use either scanner. If you would rather have someone measure the room for you, talk to HomeUpgraders and start with a human conversation.

Scan Card / Photo Calibration

Use a known physical reference in a photo to turn visible points on one flat plane into measured coordinates. This is the live Layout Library browser method.

Best when

  • You do not want to install an app.
  • You need a quick floor or wall-plane measurement.
  • The important corners are visible in a photo.
  • You can place a verified Jarvis card or flat A4 reference on the same plane.

How to use it

  1. Print the calibration sheet at actual size / 100%.
  2. Physically verify the printed dimensions before use.
  3. Place the card or A4 sheet flat on the same measurement plane.
  4. Take a clear photo with all four reference corners visible.
  5. Confirm the four calibration corners in the browser.
  6. Trace the visible room/plane boundary in order.
  7. Review width, depth, area and top-down footprint.
  8. Correct any point that is wrong, then confirm the geometry.

Do not use it to claim

Hidden-wall geometry, measurements across different depth planes, around corners, through furniture, or automatic whole-room spatial reconstruction.

Android ARCore / iPhone RoomPlan

Use the phone's native spatial tracking to build room geometry while you move through the room. Jarvis markers may improve registration/confidence, but the source remains a native spatial scan.

Best when

  • You want full-room spatial capture instead of one planar photo.
  • Furniture blocks direct sight lines and you want to trace/project the real floor/wall boundary.
  • You need editable C1…Cn room corners and top-down review.
  • You are capturing several surfaces or openings in one session.

How to use it

  1. Start a new room scan and identify the project/room before capture where available.
  2. Choose Full Scan when you can cover the room properly; use Quick Scan only when obstructions prevent the full marker set.
  3. Walk the room steadily and capture the boundary/wall evidence.
  4. Use the grid/boundary projection to place corners behind furniture where the physical wall continues.
  5. Review the top-down polygon.
  6. Move, add or delete incorrect corners before confirmation.
  7. Check openings and room dimensions against what is physically visible.
  8. Confirm the geometry, then upload it to the Layout Library evidence layer when production upload is enabled.

Full vs Quick

Full Scan carries stronger calibration coverage. Quick Scan is a valid obstruction-tolerant capture but must remain labelled scan_mode=quick; it is never silently promoted to Full.

What both modes must send to the Layout Library

The Layout Library should consume one normalized Room Measurement Evidence record while retaining how the measurement was produced. At minimum preserve:

project_id · room_id · boundary_polygon · wall/opening geometry · units · capture_source · calibration_method · calibration_references · scan_mode · device/source metadata · confidence/residual · raw evidence links · confirmed state

A Scan Card measurement may identify itself as capture_source=photo_planar; Android as capture_source=arcore; iPhone as capture_source=roomplan. Different producers, same downstream evidence contract.
